Grade 40ASTM A615280420Low-rise, stirrups

The "E" in HRB400E means the bar is for seismic use, with a tensile/yield ratio of at least 1.25 and a guaranteed maximum-force elongation (Agt) of 9%. If your structural drawings name one standard, order that standard. Do not substitute a grade with a lower yield strength without the engineer's approval.

Rebar is sold either by actual weight or by theoretical weight. Agree which one applies before you sign the contract, because the difference is typically ±3–5%.

Galvanized rebar

In marine structures, coastal buildings, water tanks, bridge decks and car parks, chlorides from sea air or de-icing salts corrode ordinary rebar and crack the concrete. Hot-dip galvanized rebar (to ASTM A767 or ISO 14657) adds a zinc layer that delays corrosion significantly. It also tolerates handling damage far better than epoxy-coated bar. Bars can be galvanized straight, or after bending to your bar-bending schedule.

Lengths, bundles and shipping

  • Standard lengths of 9 m and 12 m, or 6 m for container shipping; cut-and-bend service available.
  • Bundles of 2–3 tons, tied with wire rod, with a tag on each bundle showing heat number, size and grade.
  • Coiled rebar in 6–12 mm for straightening plants.
  • Break-bulk shipment for large orders; 20ft containers (about 25–27 tons of 5.8 m bars) for smaller projects.

Frequently asked questions

Is HRB400 equivalent to ASTM A615 Grade 60?

They are close but not identical. HRB400 has a minimum yield strength of 400 MPa, and Grade 60 requires 420 MPa. Many engineers accept HRB400E in place of Grade 60 only with a written approval, so check your specification first.

Is B500B stronger than HRB400?

B500B has a higher minimum yield (500 MPa against 400 MPa). The closest Chinese equivalent is HRB500. If your drawings specify B500B, order B500B or HRB500E.

How many 12 mm bars are in one ton?

About 94 bars of 12 m length, because 12 mm rebar weighs 0.888 kg per metre.

Can rebar be shipped in containers?

Yes. For container loading we cut bars to 5.8 m so they fit a 20ft container, which carries about 25–27 tons. 12 m bars are shipped break-bulk or in 40ft containers subject to weight limits.
