Hot-dip galvanized vs pre-galvanized pipe

Most buyers choose between two products that look similar on the quotation but behave very differently on site:

  • Hot-dip galvanized (HDG) pipe – the finished black ERW pipe is dipped in molten zinc, so the inside, the outside and the weld seam are all coated. Typical coating is 300–550 g/m² (roughly 45–75 µm). This is the right choice for potable and fire-water lines, outdoor structures and humid or coastal climates.
  • Pre-galvanized pipe – the pipe is formed from zinc-coated strip (Z60–Z275), and only the weld line is re-sprayed with zinc. It is cheaper and has a smoother, brighter surface, but the coating is thinner. It suits furniture, greenhouse frames, fencing and indoor or dry-climate use.

If your project documents only say "GI pipe", ask the consultant which one is meant. For water service in Africa and the Middle East, HDG is almost always what the specification requires.

Ends, lengths and packing

  • Ends: plain, bevelled for welding, threaded (BSPT or NPT) with sockets, or roll-grooved for fire-sprinkler systems.
  • Length: 5.8 m and 6 m fit a 20ft container; 6.4 m and 12 m are also available.
  • Packing: hexagonal bundles tied with steel strips. Thread protectors or plastic end caps are fitted on request, and bundles can be labelled with your brand and project number.
  • Documents: mill test certificate (EN 10204 3.1); third-party inspection (SGS, BV, Intertek) can be arranged before loading.

How to get an accurate price

Galvanized pipe is priced per ton, and the price depends mainly on the steel base price, the zinc coating weight and the wall thickness. To quote quickly, we need: the standard and class (for example BS 1387 Medium), the sizes and quantity of each size, HDG or pre-galvanized, the end finish, and your destination port. We ship regularly to Lagos (Apapa), Tema, Mombasa, Dar es Salaam, Jebel Ali, Dammam, Port Klang and Manila.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between BS 1387 Medium and Heavy pipe?

Same outside diameter, different wall thickness. For 2 inch pipe, Medium is 3.6 mm and Heavy is 4.5 mm. Medium is the usual choice for water service; Heavy is used where the pipe is threaded deeply or buried.

Is hot-dip galvanized pipe suitable for drinking water?

Yes, HDG pipe is widely used for potable water service. Tell us if your project needs a specific coating weight or a third-party test, and we will include it in the quotation.

How many tons of galvanized pipe fit in a container?

A 20ft container usually carries 20–25 tons of 5.8–6 m pipe, depending on the size mix. 12 m pipe is shipped in 40ft containers or as break-bulk.

Can you thread the pipe and supply sockets?

Yes. We thread to BSPT or NPT and fit one coupling per pipe, with plastic caps protecting the other thread.
